How to explore workplace fit in interviews.

Explore experience, expectations and workplace conditions beyond type labels.

MindMatch Journal editorial team

01 Agree on the working conditions first.

Interviewers may interpret fit differently. Agree on required actions, decisions needing approval and available support. Separate similarity in personal preferences from compatibility with working conditions.

02 Ask about experience before expectations.

Ask for a task the candidate handled independently, including constraints and consultation. Then ask whether they expect similar autonomy here. With limited work experience, discuss a specific school or activity example and record its context accurately.

03 Turn differences into questions for both sides.

Explain differences directly: “This role requires approval for X. How would that work for you?” Discuss what support and adjustments are possible. Use assessment results to inform dialogue, and avoid hiring conclusions based solely on a type or single score.
